Tamarind Hut is a 1½ acre coconut-grove ‘island’ surrounded by rice paddies, set in the valley of the ancient Yatagala Temple, directly inland from Unawatuna, one of southern Sri Lanka’s best beaches. The accommodation at Tamarind is a traditional wattle and daub home, with two bedrooms, teak furniture, traditional textiles and a 16-metre swimming pool. The proposition is simple luxury.
From beneath the sweeping palm roof, a wide open verandah looks out across an acre of coconut and bread fruit trees, with cultivated rice paddies beyond.
The bedrooms have large 4 post beds with mosquito nets and fans, with en-suite polished-cement bathrooms with cold (coolly refreshing rather than icily unpleasant) water showers.

The bright lights of Galle Fort, a UNESCO world heritage site with cosmopolitan shopping and dining options, and luxury hotels, are 20 minutes away, and an excellent beach (with surfing outside the lagoon) and bar at Wijaya, Dalawella, is only 10 minutes by village road.

The house is staffed with a house boy and gardener. They will do the housework, laundry and shopping, but not cooking. A small kitchen is equipped with all the essentials for Asian or European cuisine. The market in Galle, and local fishermen, offer a good range of fresh produce.
A cook can be arranged on request, as can a tuk tuk with driver or bicycles.
Further information about how to make the most of your time in Sri Lanka will be provided upon booking.
