Diyabubula is a 4.75 acre water garden,
entirely forested, located 3km along the
Kalundawa Bakamuna road off the Dambulla
Matale main road. As the name implies, there
is a perennial spring on the land and a
stream runs around one boundary. There are
5 small wewas (lakes) and a dam impounding
a large body of water.The forest includes
over 50 mahogany trees over 8 years old,
and over 10,000 trees and shrubs. It is
refuge for a large variety of birds and
small mammals and reptiles.The garden has
10 sculptures designed and executed by artist
Laki Senanayake, who is also the owner of
the property. The main house has one large
bed room and attached bath on the ground
floor, and a large and open sitting area
with open deck overlooking a large lake,
on the upper floor. The dining and cooking
area is on the ground floor beside a rock
pool. there is a seperate building away
from the main house, with 2 rooms, kitchen,
a store, veranda and toilets for watcher
and staff. Both houses are wired and supplied
with electricity, and the water tank is
supplied by the spring. This house and garden
has been featured in "Asian Tropical Houses"
a book on Asian architecture by Professor
Robert Powell of the university of Singapore.
